The Old Town Teachers Organization is a member of the Illinois Federation of Teachers. Our union local is 909. The Illinois Federation of Teachers is the union that covers charter, Montessori, private, and Chicago public schools. But OTTO is not an outside organization or a third party; it is a democratic organization run by its members who make decisions and set direction on our own behalf.

Mission
The Old Town School of Folk Music builds community by teaching music and encouraging cultural expression rooted in egalitarian and diverse traditions.
Our commitment to the mission of music education and community-building must be reflected in organizational structures such as strong teacher representation on the board, teacher participation in administrative and strategic decisions, security and stability for our teaching artists, and inclusion of student and staff concerns and perspectives.
In order to achieve and preserve this mission, the Old Town Teachers Organization has unionized with the Illinois Federation of Teachers. Only by becoming a legally recognized entity can we preserve the community that is the lifeblood of this venerable organization.
